If you’re expecting during the warmer months, here are some essential tips to help you stay cool and comfortable:

1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate:

This cannot be stressed enough. Drinking plenty of water is crucial for staying cool and avoiding dehydration, which can lead to complications during pregnancy. Carry a water bottle with you wherever you go, and aim to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day.

 

2. Dress for the weather:

Opt for loose-fitting, lightweight clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Light colors reflect the sun’s rays, helping you stay cooler. Maternity dresses, flowy tops, and comfortable shorts or skirts can be your best friends in hot weather.

 

3. Seek shade and stay indoors during peak hours:

The sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Try to limit outdoor activities during these hours, and if you must be outside, seek shade under umbrellas, trees, or awnings. Plan any outdoor activities for early morning or late evening when it’s cooler.

 

4. Use sunscreen:

Opt for smaller, more frequent meals that are easy to digest. Fresh fruits and vegetables, salads, and cold soups like gazpacho can help keep you hydrated and provide essential nutrients without weighing you down.

 

8. Stay cool indoors:

If you have air conditioning at home, make the most of it. Keep your living space comfortably cool, and use fans to circulate air if AC isn’t available. Consider spending time in air-conditioned public places like malls or libraries during the hottest parts of the day.

 

9. Stay active, but stay safe:

Gentle exercise like prenatal yoga or swimming can help you stay fit and relieve stress. Avoid strenuous activity in hot weather, and listen to your body. If you feel dizzy, fatigued, or overheated, stop and rest in a cool place immediately.

 

10. Get plenty of rest:

Pregnancy can be exhausting, especially in the heat. Listen to your body and prioritize rest. Take naps if you need to and try to sleep in a cool, comfortable environment.
